Publicity of Modern Philanthropy: Who and Why Needs It? October 20, 2011


Moscow Donors Forum is a leading professional partnership of the largest Russian and foreign funds and structures which are carrying out grantmaking organizations in Russia. The partnership invites you to the well-known philanthropy event of 2011– the conference “Publicity of Modern Philanthropy: Who and Why Needs It?”


The main goal of the conference is gathering the authority of people and organizations in the oldest open charity platform in order to discuss and to exchange the best practices and experiences in this field and to create a common view of the actual aspects of the Philanthropy in Russia.


The main topic of the Conference 2011 is the publicity of the philanthropy. It is not new topic for the professional community. However the controversy whether the charity should be public doesn’t dismiss, especially in the forms of funds and long-term programs. Publicity of the charitable organization can be expressed in various aspects of its work such as existence of an independent managing council, the complete reporting before donors and a society and communication with stakeholders in general. In conference with representatives of the leading charitable organizations, business communities, public authorities and mass-media, we plan to discuss how we can find the real ways of providing publicity in charity sphere and in which way the fundraising is connected with the publicity. Also we plan to discuss whether there are more benefits or risks in charity publicity. Attraction to activity of the charitable organizations, public figures and famous people will be a separate topic of discussion.


Participation in the conference. Conference is intended not only for members of the Donors Forum and the partner organizations who has chosen charity as the profession, but also for everyone who shows interest and possibility of adoption in subjects. Leading experts, heads and managers of the largest funds, the companies providing projects in sphere of philanthropy , representatives of authorities, the advanced mass-media, the research centers and many other gather on the platform every year. 10.15 - 11.30 – Plenary session: major questions and starting points Philanthropy is a widely discussed topic, there are more and more people and organizations involved in it and are trying to answer such questions as: why to be involved in philanthropy? What is the total philanthropic budget of the country? Shall we talk about our own philanthropic activities? Although noone ever agreed, that these are the major questions about philanthropy. We believe, that it is a right time to articulate key questions and try to find answers. Opening Plenary is formed with the technology of “FreshVision”: it will let us to find the questions and the conference will let us to find answers. Moderators: Eugeny Machnev, EVM company and Boris Tsyrulnikov, Togliatti Community Foundation

12.00 - 13.30 Launch of the First Russian Donors Forum’s Annual Report: “Development of institutional philanthropy in Russia” What is the real size of charity in Russia? How many professional donor organizations are there in the country? What are the major tendencies and forecasts of institutional philanthropy development? These and other questions are covered in the First annual report of the Donors Forum on the state of institutional philanthropy development. Authors of the report and experts will present its content and discuss it the conference participants.

14.30 - 16.30 – Concurrent Sessions


Session 1. Transparency, reporting, and self-regulation as tools for donor and philanthropic organizations Although existing surveys show , that donors believe in importance of transparency, reporting, and self-regulation, not all of them use these tools in practical work. What tools are used and can be practiced be Russian foundations? What are the modern international approaches to transparency? Is there any connection between transparency, accountability and effectiveness of organization? How much does transparency cost? What is the role of self-regulation?


Session 2. The Russian philanthropy on the map: what is the contribution of Russian philanthropists in solving global social problems? Philanthropic activities of Russian donors abroad remains a black spot for the country. Who are these donor? What are the major focus of their interests? What our foreign colleagues think of Russian philanthropy? These and many other questions will be discussed at the session 


Section 3. Joint philanthropic projects: how to secure publicity? Philanthropic projects often involve a number of participants: donors of different types, NGOs, mass-media and etc. What are the roles and expectations of all parties? How to lower risks for the project from the very beginning and to split responsibilities among partners? How to build effective communication between partners and how to position projects for the public? What is the role of mass-media?


Section 4. Fundraising: Technologies and Challenges Fundraising is the imprescriptibly part of philanthropy. A lot of charitable institutions raise funds for their activities – community foundations, support-foundations, endowments. But methods and technologies they use differ from one type of organization to another, from one philanthropic issue to another. Is there a way to ensure interests of different types of fundraisers? How to fund raise regularly for unpopular issues and infrustructure? What is the way to move from impulsive giving to planned philanthropy?

17.00-18.30 Plenary Discussion: Celebrity as a technology in philanthropy To involve a “star” or well-known person to work with your organization is a dream not only fundraising, but also other philanthropic institutions. But not all organizations succeed in it. What can celebrity do for organization? What are the major pros and corns of attracting well-known person to organization? How to explain celebrity his/her duties in organization? What kind of responsibility organization can impose on VIP? Discussion is devoted to case studies analysis from Moscow and regions.
